AMERICAN INFANTRY REGIMENTS
AND INDEPENDENT BATTALIONS: TO 1783 - PART 4
The Revolutionary Army
Cavalry and artillery are widely involved in combat by their nature,
and are usually conceived by commanders as integral components with infantry
in the winning of land battles. Cavalry, artillery, and infantry were
(and still are) deployed as mutually-supporting, manoeuver elements
in land battles. Cavalry and artillery units often participated at less
than full unit strength in detachments, or companies, to spread their
support for the infantry, which is accepted as the principal manoeuver
element. I have divided the state units into the categories assigned by
those states (Continental, New England, Militia, etc).[1]
