EASTERN NORTH AMERICA: 1774

Pre-Revolution America

The map above reflects the complexity of the inter-European claims in America. We see Spanish, French, and British claims contending with the Indians. (Within the Caribbean there were also the Dutch and Danes, as well as the French. In South America there are also the Portugese.) The Revolution not only gained the 13 Colonies their independence, it clarified many boundaries amongst the British, Spanish, and French.

Commercial interests represented by the Hudson's Bay consortium and indicated here as Rupert's Land were also put on notice and soon began to be curtailed by government interests.
